Disappearing bees

We have a crisis with our bees disappearing that is very serious.  Bees are very important to keeping our food supply plentiful.  We need the bees for pollination.

Cheerios just gave away a large number of seeds for wildflowers.  The response was greater than they imagined and this is good news!

I am getting started now on planting flowers on my property and at some point will start a bee colony.  You can help also by planting flowers and buying local honey.

With allergy season upon on us, local honey is the best for fighting off seasonal allergy issues.  Use honey instead of refined sugar in your recipes and drinks.  A tablespoon at night will soothe your cough.

Help do your part!  This is a serious issue but with everyone's help we can make a difference.

Swarm Traps and Bee Hives

I think for the most part, people who love honey also love the availability of local bee keepers, wherefore we can go and BUY a jar of fresh honey WITHOUT having to come in contact with the BEES

Am I right?

But there are some, and I am grateful for them, who prefer to raise bees and have their own honey farm.

Some of my readers may be thinking about doing this as well!  So, I was looking around the other day and I found something that may be of interest to those who are thinking about getting started in raising bees and how to do it for free.

Caution - Honey is not for everyone

CAUTION!!
HONEY IS NOT FOR EVERYONE

As much as I enjoy honey and enjoy talking about it on my blog I do feel that a word of caution is called for here.   Honey is not for everyone and all honey is not created equal.

First, medical experts caution do not feed honey to your infant. It could prove lethal and it’s recommended that no child under the age of two should consume honey because their immune system may not be able to fight off certain contents found in some honey.

If you are allergic to be stings do not consume honey.

Some prescription drugs may react to honey. Honey is a byproduct of bees and flower pollens and therefore subject to environmental pollutions. Most of them are trace amounts and harmless but awhile back a shipment of honey was turned back when it was found to contain traces of allergens that were strictly forbidden in any amount. History has shown that in the past, wars were won by sickening the enemy with honey produced by pollen from certain plants in various areas of the world.

For these reasons, and others we wont go into on this small post, it is imperative that we buy our honey from trusted sources and if ever in doubt about a medical condition we should always consult our physician. Normally you can trust our honey supplies here in the USA as far as toxins and allergens are concerned.

If you are interested in honey products just to  replace sugar or artificial sweeteners in your diet then most honeys can fill that bill for you. It’s simply a matter of finding the product that suits your taste.  However, if it is for a health condition, then you should do much more research.

Honey is touted to have amazing healing powers and is credited with curing everything from dry skin, acne, various other skin conditions, hair conditioning, irritable bowl disease, gout,  arthritis, blurry vision even cancer. As I said before , consulting your doctor before starting a honey regimen may be a good idea.

The most sought after honey products today seem to come from New Zeeland. The flowers of the MANUCA TREE found only in small valley of New Zeeland is reported to have miraculous healing powers. Unfortunately, even this honey does not supply consistent grades of honey, so the purest crops are in very high demand around the world.  Genuine Manuca honey can be very expensive needless to say.

For your convenience I have included a link to a reputable Manuca  supplier that I am familiar with. They offer many other honey products and types as well as very reasonable pricing so if you would like to learn more about various honey products or want to know what a particular honey will cost you can find out simply by looking to the right of this page for one of my Manuka honey ads by Amazon.  As I write this post they are offering  holiday discounts and free shipping so that can help with the budget too.
